What Is Gynecomastia?
What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is defined as excessive breast growth in men. Gynecomastia can occur even in infancy, and it mostly becomes apparent in adolescence. It is possible to encounter gynecomastia in advanced ages. Gynecomastia is a problem that affects not only the physical health of the person but the mental health negatively and needs to be treated. Having feminine and large breasts causes a lack of self-confidence and failure in social life in men.
Gynecomastia does not disappear with exercise or weight loss because it is not a problem related to weight gain. In pseudo-gynecomastia due to the accumulation of adipose tissue, weight gain increases the size of the breast and some reduction may occur with slimming.
What Are the Types of Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia consists of three types: glandular, mixed type, and lipomatous. The glandular type is called the growth of breast tissue. In cases, growth similar to female breast tissue is encountered. The type that occurs as a result of the increase in adipose tissue is lipomatous. The cases that occur as a result of both the increase in adipose tissue and the increase in breast tissue are called mixed types. Gynecomastia patients are generally treated with mixed type diagnosis.
After the cause of gynecomastia is decided, treatment is planned. Gynecomastia is divided into 3 stages according to its size and the size of the sagging skin. In the first stage, it is limited in size; there is no looseness or sagging of the skin. In the second phase, the skin has not sagged yet, but it looks like a female breast. In the third stage, additionally, there is looseness and sagging of the skin that may require a separated treatment.
The person should know the symptoms well for gynecomastia to be treated before it reaches the last stage. These symptoms can be listed as breast tenderness, pain, nipple discharge, the size difference between two breasts, feeling of the lump under the nipple, and armpit swelling.
What Are the Causes of Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia occurs as a result of hormonal imbalance. If the testosterone hormone decreases in the male, and the estrogen hormone increases, gynecomastia is seen. Even rarely, drugs used other than curing hormonal imbalances; herbal products or various diseases may cause gynecomastia. You should consult your doctor to find out the exact reason for your situation.
Treatment planning is made according to the cause and stage of gynecomastia. Gynecomastia, which has existed for more than a year in adults, does not respond to medical methods, in this case, surgical procedure is necessary. Surgical removal of the hard breast tissue is sufficient in glandular gynecomastia. In mixed-type gynecomastia, there is an excess of glandular tissue and adipose tissue, these should be removed and the liposuction method should be used in addition. Fat tissue is predominant in fatty gynecomastia, so it can only be treated with liposuction.
