Otoplasty (Prominent Ear Aesthetics)

The problem that the cartilaginous area called pinna of the ear is larger than it should be or more separated from the skull is called a prominent ear. In the prominent ear, some parts of the cartilage that should be curved are flat. As a result, the angle is greater than normal between the pinna and the head, and the ear is bent forward. The cartilage, especially the upper part of the pinna, is flatter than normal. A prominent ear problem, which is a completely aesthetic deformity, has no harm in terms of health. It can cause school-age children to be mocked by their friends, psychological problems that last for years, and self-confidence problems. For this reason, the most suitable age for correcting the deformity in the ear is 6 years. Ear development is completed to a great extent, the child is treated before starting school, and the psychological trauma he/she will suffer at school is avoided. Prominent ear correction operation can be performed in all age groups after the age of 6.

In prominent ear surgery also known as otoplasty, local anesthesia can usually be applied. If it is thought that the patient will not comply with and local anesthesia is not desired, general anesthesia can also be applied. The surgical plan created as a result of the examination is applied. A bandage covering the ears is usually applied for 2-3 days after the procedure. It is beneficial to wear a tennis band to protect the ears for about 20 days after the pressured dressing is opened. Complete otoplasty recovery can take up to six weeks and during that time, you can start to resume your daily activities under the guidance of your otoplasty surgeon’s advice.

Is there an age limit for otoplasty?

Otoplasty can be done when the ears reach their full size, most often after the age of 5. This operation is recommended if the eardrums are placed so that they protrude significantly outside the surface of the head.

Will Otoplasty improve my hearing?

No, otoplasty is just a cosmetic surgery procedure and does not affect ear function.

How long will I have to wear a headband?

You should wear a headband for at least 10-14 days after the surgery. After that period, you can start wearing headband only during sleep to reduce the chance of injuries (5-7 weeks).

Can Otoplasty change the size of my ears?

Yes, otoplasty can alter the shape, size, and protrusion of your ears
